This week, instead of the usual dim sum Wednesday, my friend Ming and I decided to try some Hong Kong-style food. We went to this place in the mall (of course, I don’t remember the name). I’m pretty sure it was a chain. Anyway, here are some photos of the meal.
- Crispy fried pork belly
- Porridge with minced scallops
- Chinese broccoli with oyster oil and oyster sauce
- Fried rice noodles with beef
- This seemed to be a take on the “root beer float” idea. Chocolate ice cream floating in coke and cream. I normally try to stay away from soda, but today I decided to indulge.
Honestly, most of the food was lacking in flavor and needed some salt (we both agreed). He said he thought that he had been to other branches of this chain and that the food tasted better. We decided that next week we should revert back to more dim sum.
After that, we headed over to another mall (there are at least 3 malls all in the same area around here). In fact, there may actually be four. I wanted some dessert, and Ming suggested that we go to a different chain place that served more Hong Kong-style fruit-based desserts. Luckily, there were more than just fruit items to choose from (I thought most of the desserts looked too sweet). I ended up choosing what was described as “walnut porridge” and “sesame porridge.” We also ordered something called “Iced Chocolate Treat,” which looked like it was served with pieces of some kind of chocolate cereal. The porridges were, surprisingly, not too sweet at all. I especially enjoyed the walnut porridge. Next time, I may try the almond porridge that Ming had.
On a separate note, while waiting for our desserts, I noticed something that looked like some kind of ad for something on the walls nearby. I asked Ming about them, and he wasn’t sure what they were for. I thought the captions on them were the most interesting, though. See if you can figure out what they mean.
