The other day, my friend Ming and I headed into Guangzhou to take a look at some well-known areas of downtown. But first, we needed to stop for some grub at a place called the Macau Street restaurant (apparently this is a chain).
- No, it’s not an “Engrish” word, the ‘S’ just wore off.
- Curry shrimp & mushrooms sauteed in oyster sauce.
- Pork neck with southern white vinegar
After lunch, we headed to Liwan Lake. While walking through for a bit, it reminded me of Hangzhou’s “West Lake” due to the river boats and lush green trees. Though I found West Lake to be more beautiful overall, I’m sure this area is even more lush-looking when more of the flowers are in bloom. There are also plenty of food venues and souvenir shops along the way.
- Some of the old city buildings remain with elderly people still living in some of them.
- The upcoming Guangzhou Flower Festival
- Yes, “Hello Kitty” makes its presence known all over.
- A woman singing traditional Chinese songs (and yes, it sounded exactly like you think it would).
- My friend Ming said that this Bhudda was a gift from Thailand.
After we left Liwan Lake, we headed towards a place called Shamian Island. It first served as a trade port and later became a strategic defense area for the city during the Opium Wars. The island was divided into two sections, one for the French and the other for the UK, and the architecture here reflects this western influence. The US General Consulate is also located here.
- The river dividing the island from the rest of the city.
